Paladino chose to give a specific connotation to the most charming spaces of the Museum of Santa Giulia, whose premises stand on what once was an ancient monastic complex. Inside the Cloister of Santa Maria in Solario is the 1990 Grande figura reclinata (Large Reclined Figure) in painted bronze. Another never displayed before large 2016 bronze figure guards the Renaissance Cloister, while the Grande Figura in vetro e acciaio (Large Figure in Glass and Steel, 2015) in the Nuns’ Choir watches over the coated-iron Croce (Cross, 2008), which from the ancient stone floor where it lies flat establishes a dialogue with the great sixteenth-century Crucifixion by Ferramola above it.

The bare architectural clarity of the Lombard church of San Salvatore – the heart of Brescia’s UNESCO site –, with its exquisite stucco decoration, finds a perfect complement in Paladino’s Velario (Velarium, 2010) and Testa in pietra (Head of Stone,1992).

Inside the Chapel of Sant’Obizio, another great Bronzo (Bronze, 2002) lends a three-dimensional quality to one of Romanino’s frescoes. Also of note is the enthralling poetical presence inside the Crypt of Senza titolo (Untitled), Paladino’s 2002 famous bronze figure with birds.

More works lead on to the Museum rooms, starting from the Prehistoric and Protohistoric Section where the ancient vessels on display greet the two iron and terracotta Dormiente (Sleeper, 2000) figures, which with their presence seem to eternalise the most ancient artefacts of the museum. Paladino’s terracotta and lime and iron and bronze helmets are echoes of the ancient finds part of the museum collections.

The works selected for the Roman and Medieval Section include Bue Apis (Bull Apis,1993) and a series of Vasi ermetici (Hermetic Vases,1994), in bronze and iron respectively. Classic models are clearly echoed in two other splendid bronze sculptures, one dating to 1999 and Busto con tazzina (Bust with a Cup, 2000), and in Architettura (Architecture), also in this section.

Two painted aluminium figures (2005) complement the ancient Roman mosaics of the Domus dell’Ortaglia, while Cavaliere rosso (Red Horseman, 2007), a bronze evoking Marino Marini’s sculptural style, is set among the Roman frescoes.
